When Should Kids Have an Eye Exam?

We recommend a child’s first eye exam at age 2, even if no vision issues are apparent. Early exams help us detect concerns before they affect development or learning.

After their first visit, we generally recommend annual exams throughout childhood and adolescence, unless otherwise advised.

These visits enable us to track changes, manage any conditions early, and help your child perform at their best at every stage.

Vision & Your Child’s Development

Clear, comfortable vision supports everything from hand-eye coordination to reading and social interaction. Studies have shown a direct link between visual issues and delays in learning, speech, motor skills, and even behaviour.

Some vision problems in young children may mimic attention or learning challenges. That’s why routine exams are so important. Even if your child appears to see well, many common eye conditions may go unnoticed without a thorough exam.

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors are the most common vision issues in children. These include nearsightedness (myopia), where distant objects appear blurry; farsightedness (hyperopia), where close-up tasks like reading can be complex; and astigmatism, which causes overall blurred or distorted vision.

Even mild vision issues can affect your child’s performance in school, coordination in sports, and overall confidence. Because kids don’t always know what “normal” vision looks like, these issues often go unnoticed without a proper exam.

Amblyopia occurs when one eye doesn’t develop normal vision, often because it’s not working well with the other. The brain starts to favour the stronger eye, which can lead to permanent vision loss in the weaker eye if left untreated.

It’s not always easy to spot amblyopia—your child may not complain or show signs, but it’s one of the most common causes of preventable vision loss in kids. When caught early, treatments like patching and glasses can help.

Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are misaligned. One may turn in, out, up, or down while the other looks straight ahead. The misalignment can cause double vision, issues with depth perception, or, over time, amblyopia.

Early detection is key. In many cases, treatment can involve corrective lenses. We’ll carefully assess your child’s eye alignment during their exam and guide you through the next steps if necessary.

Myopia is on the rise in children, especially with increased screen time and less time outdoors. If your child is squinting, sitting close to the TV, or complaining of blurry distance vision, they may be nearsighted.

We monitor for myopia closely and may recommend myopia control options (like special contact lenses or glasses) to help slow its progression and reduce long-term risks.

What Happens During a Children’s Eye Exam?

Our exams are designed to be gentle, fun, and age-appropriate, whether your child is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between.

We’ll assess:

  • Visual acuity (how clearly your child sees)
  • Eye movement and coordination
  • Depth perception
  • Focusing ability
  • Eye health (inside and out)

We’ll also ask questions about screen time, headaches, school performance, and other symptoms that may point to visual issues.

If your child needs correction, we offer a great selection of kids’ eyewear, from colourful frames to durable lenses. For older children, we may also explore contact lens options.

Digital Eye Strain & Screen Time

Many kids now spend hours each day on tablets, phones, and computers. While digital devices can be great tools, they also place extra demands on young eyes. This can lead to symptoms like:

  • Headaches
  • Dry eye
  • Blurred vision
  • Difficulty focusing

During your child’s exam, we’ll talk about healthy screen habits and how to reduce digital eye strain, especially for kids learning online or using screens for long stretches.
