Protecting Your Vision with Preventive Care

Some of the most serious eye diseases, like glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and diabetic retinopathy, can begin with little or no warning. But when we catch them early during a comprehensive eye exam, we can often take steps to slow their progression and help preserve your sight.

At Avon Eye Care, we utilize innovative imaging and diagnostic tools to screen for signs of vision-threatening conditions, even before symptoms become apparent. Whether you’re managing dry eye, monitoring floaters and flashes, or concerned about your risk for AMD, we’re here to guide you with expertise and compassion.

We also coordinate care with trusted specialists in the Avon area when needed. Book your eye exam today and take a proactive step toward lifelong vision health.

Why Early Detection Matters

Many eye diseases, like glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and age-related macular degeneration, begin silently, with no pain or early warning signs. Early diagnosis gives us the best chance to manage the condition effectively and preserve your vision.

During a comprehensive eye exam, we look beyond your prescription to assess your overall eye health. Our technology enables us to examine the internal structures of your eyes, measure eye pressure, and detect subtle changes that may indicate disease, even in its earliest stages.

Our Diagnostic Technology

We believe in catching eye diseases early, often before symptoms appear. That’s why we’ve invested in quality, noninvasive diagnostic tools that help us see what’s happening beneath the surface:

  • optos Ultra-Widefield Imaging: Captures a detailed image of the retina without dilation.
  • OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography): Creates a cross-sectional scan of retinal layers to detect early damage.
  • Fundus Photography: Provides a visual record of the retina for ongoing monitoring.
  • Visual Field Testing: Helps detect changes in peripheral vision, which can signal glaucoma or neurological concerns.
  • Pachymetry: Measures corneal thickness, an important factor in glaucoma risk.
  • iCare Tonometer: An efficient way to measure eye pressure with no puff of air.

Our team also believes in patient education and being informed about the different diseases and conditions that can affect your eyes and vision.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is often referred to as the “silent thief of sight” because it gradually damages the optic nerve over time, typically due to increased pressure within the eye. It’s one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss, but early treatment can help slow progression.

We monitor for glaucoma using innovative tools like OCT, visual field testing, pachymetry, and iCare tonometry. If you’re diagnosed with glaucoma, we may prescribe eye drops or oral medications to manage eye pressure.

In some cases, we’ll co-manage your care with a surgeon if a surgical approach becomes necessary.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

AMD affects the macula, the part of your retina responsible for central vision. It can make reading, recognizing faces, or driving more difficult over time.

We use OCT, fundus photography, and optos imaging to monitor the retina for signs of AMD. While there is currently no cure, nutritional supplements (available at our office) may help slow the progression in certain cases.

If advanced treatment is needed, we’ll refer you to a trusted retina specialist for further care.

Cataracts

Cataracts cause the eye’s natural lens to become cloudy, often leading to blurry vision, trouble with night driving, and increased sensitivity to glare. They are a normal part of aging, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with the symptoms.

If cataracts begin to affect your daily life, we’ll co-manage your surgical care, helping you choose a trusted specialist and providing pre- and post-operative support throughout your treatment journey.

Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels in the retina, leading to a range of issues collectively known as diabetic retinopathy. Over time, it can threaten your vision even if your blood sugar is well-controlled.

We perform diabetic eye exams using optos scans, OCT, and visual field testing to look for early signs of damage. If we detect changes, we’ll create a monitoring plan or refer you to a specialist for care when needed. Annual diabetic eye exams are recommended, even if your vision appears to be fine.

Dry Eye Disease

Chronic dry eye can affect your comfort and clarity of vision. In some cases, dry eye is associated with other conditions, such as blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction.

We offer personalized dry eye treatment plans, including in-office diagnostics and options like warm compress therapy, lid hygiene sprays, omega-3 supplements, and punctal plugs. Learn more about our approach to dry eye treatment.

Flashes & Floaters

Sudden flashes of light or an increase in floaters may signal a retinal issue, especially if the symptoms develop quickly. While many floaters are harmless, they should always be evaluated to rule out retinal tears or detachment.

We offer detailed retinal imaging using optos ultra-widefield scans to investigate your symptoms and help you understand the next steps.
